Poster tips

How to make a lost cat poster that actually works

Keep it readable from a moving car

  1. One big, clear photo. Pick a close-up where their face and markings are easy to see. Skip the cute costume shots.
  2. Huge headline, few words. “LOST CAT” plus the name, where and when they were last seen, and a phone number. That is all most people will read.
  3. Phone number in large print. Tear-off tabs help, because people rarely stop to type a number into their phone.
  4. Leave out your home address. A cross street or landmark is enough, and it keeps you safer.

Where to put your posters

  • Within a few blocks of home first. Most indoor cats that slip out hide very close by.
  • Mailbox clusters, bus stops, school crossings, and the entrances to parks.
  • Vet clinics, pet stores, groomers, and the local animal shelter (ask first).
  • Community boards at grocery stores, coffee shops, and laundromats.

Then share the square image in local Facebook groups and on Nextdoor, and ask neighbors with doorbell cameras to check their clips from the night your cat went missing.

Lost cat poster FAQ

Your missing cat poster questions, answered

What should a lost cat poster say?

Keep it short enough to read from a passing car: “LOST CAT” in big letters, one clear photo, your cat’s name, where and when they were last seen, and a phone number. Add one or two details that set your cat apart, like a kinked tail or a red collar. A reward is optional, but it does get attention.

Is this lost cat flyer template really free?

Yes. The poster maker is free with no sign-up, and your poster is made right in your browser. You only need to give us an email if you also want a free listing on the Lost Cat Board.

Can I make a poster on my phone?

Yes. Fill in the form on your phone, then download the PDF or image and print it at home, at the library, or at any print shop. Most shops can print straight from your phone.

How far do lost cats usually go?

Not far, in most cases. Research on lost cats suggests indoor-only cats are usually found very close to home, often within a few houses of where they got out, hiding quietly. Cats that are used to going outside tend to roam farther. That is why posters within a few blocks of home matter most.

How do I share my lost cat poster online?

Download the square social image and post it in local Facebook groups, on Nextdoor and on Instagram. Put your cat on the Lost Cat Board too, so you get a link to share, a QR code on your poster, and email alerts when a neighbor reports a sighting.

Can other people print posters for my cat?

Yes. Every listing on the Lost Cat Board has a “Print a poster” button, so friends and neighbors can print and hang posters to help without you lifting a finger.

Don’t give up

Lost cats are found weeks, even months, later. Keep looking.
